On Wednesday we learned that Verizon is allowing its MVNOs to activate 3G and Non-VoLTE phones until December 31, 2018. That’s an extension from the original June 30, 2018 cut off date for activating these devices  There was speculation as to whether the new December 31 deadline would also apply to Verizon itself, including Verizon Prepaid.

Today we got the answer. The National Wireless Independent Dealer Association (NWIDA) reported on its blog that Verizon is mostly sticking with the June 30, 2018 cutoff for new 3G and non-VoLTE phone activations on its own branded services.

There are a few exceptions for specific non LTE and non VoLTE devices. The exceptions are:

    • The LG Gizmo Pal 2 (LG-VC110 and LG-VC110B) and LG Gizmo Gadget (LG-VC200 and LG-VC200B) child tracking wearables can be activated on Verizon postpaid until September 30, 2018.
    • The LG Zone 3 (LG-VS425PP and LG-VS425LPP), LG Zone 2 (LG-VS415PP), Moto G Play (MOTXT1609PP) and Samsung Galaxy J1 (SM-J100VLPP) LTE Android phones and the Samsung Gusto 3 (SMB311VZPP) 3G flip phone can be on activated on Verizon Prepaid until December 31, 2018.
    • As reported earlier, Vertizon MVNOs will still be able to activate any Verizon compatible device, including 3G and non-VoLTE phones, until December 31, 2018.

Verizon is also restricting the types of changes customers with grandfathered 3G and non-VoLTE phones can make to their accounts. From July 1, 2018 until June 30, 2019 customers can still make the following changes:

    • Device ID changes (I believe this means changing to a different supported 3G or non-LTE device)
    • Phone number changes
    • Plan changes
    • Suspend and resume service
    • Reactivate phone numbers

Starting July 1, 2019, customers with a grandfathered 3G or non-VoLTE device will not be able to:

    • Make rate plan and feature changes
    • Change their phone number
    • Restore accounts from Hotline and Suspend status
    • Restore de-Activations that were made in error
    • Make SIM changes on existing non-VoLTE devices

Users with grandfathered devices can switch to Verizon approved VoLTE capable phones or LTE capable data devices at any time.

On December 31, 2019, the Verizon 2G and 3G networks will be shut down. 3G devices will no longer connect to the network and non-VoLTE LTE phones will not be able to make or recieve phone calls.
